Affordable Church Marketing

There are 2 common schools of thought when you hear the term, “church marketing.”
#1 - How can we water-down the gospel message by infusing our outreach methods with secular tactics?
#2 - Using relevant creative communication along with a strategic marketing plan, we leverage every opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus.
If you’ve read this blog at all, you’ll hear us talk about John Jantsch’s definition of marketing. We like the simplicity of it. The creator and founder of Duct Tape Marketing*, says it this way:
“GETTING PEOPLE WITH A NEED TO KNOW, LIKE AND TRUST YOU.”
In a world full of suspicion about the church at large, we have barriers to overcome. The culture of Jesus’ day reminds us of what we deal with today. There were alot of “religious” people at odds with the “real people” who were struggling to make ends meet, wrestling with tough issues of death and disease, and more than ever, they were a mob of common folks in need of hope. That actually sounds just like our day.
So as Jesus did His miracles, demonstrated compassion and spoke in ways no one had ever heard a “religious person” talk - the mob began to listen. They began to hear. They began to respond and follow Him. What he did and demonstrated opened doors for communicating the real truth.
The style or communication medium is what God often uses to open the eyes and ears first … and then their hearts are compelled to act.
As churches seek to gain the trust of people today, you are trying to break down the barriers so that the people in need of the gospel will somehow come to know who you are and ultimately come to trust you. Marketing is the tool by which you represent accurately the gospel. Rather than clothing yourselves in an elitist arrogance like the Pharisees did, you should present ourselves as open as you can, and try to find ways to relate to people. With authenticity, you show them that you are not unlike them in their struggles, problems and challenges.
The Marketing Twins believe that “church marketing” says that Jesus was the original promoter of the church. He is our model for communicating in a resonating language, breaking down barriers by offering a unique message, and drawing people to Himself through words of conviction and decent acts of human compassion.
One of our pastoral friends recently talked of pushing the message of Jesus and the presence of the church further into the community. Is your church ready to do that in the most effective way possible? Contact us so we can help you create an affordable church marketing plan!
