Cute picture of the wife -- it is interesting I've heard that Coke's big struggle is that they are no longer competing with just Pepsi. They consider their competitors the 64 ounces that one consumes everyday -- water, juice, etc -- and since they produce a lot of that product, they compete against themselves.

When we diet -- we're are worst enemy. Another reason we need a coach.

Good pitch.

Trina,
Thanks for the comment - and yes they blew it on 2 pts. #! - just the victory itself should have been a HUGE feature on their home page - but you are right that #2 - Colt is a HUGE role model for young athletes of character - in TX, we know there is fierce competition for Texas home-grown student-athletes - among Tech, UT, A&M, not to mention a host of other great universities. They should be using this kid to attract others like him. Even faith-based universities (Abilene Christian, TCU, Baylor, etc...are in the competition and UT needs to realize that).

I agree with these comments! This was a big flub! How disappointing. In a day and age when male role models for our youth is so very important, you would think a great school like UT with such an admirable young man as Colt McCoy, would want to use that to their every advantage - not just as a recruiting tool but as a great link to making a difference in our society! So many reasons to be focused on this opportunity!

I'm sorry for the long post - as the year gets going with a LONG list of TO-DOs, I wanted to get this post last week, but I just ran out of time to edit it. So, today you get the more raw version. I usually try and keep posts to 500 words or less. But I know this one is more like 800+ (no pun intended).

I'll try and keep 'em shorter in 09.

Thanks Natalie - I like the applications y'all are making - very practical!

For the rest of you, Natalie and I connected through Twitter and we've swapped blogs. I enjoy hearing what practical applications people are making in marketing their business and/or changing the communication landscape through social media tools like Facebook and Twitter. Fascinating to me.

Not just small businesses, but big businesses too! I'm in the public transportation industry and we're facing major budget cuts (gee thanks governator) and so we're using social media to bring things to our customers that are free. Like transportation alerts (we're @sdmts) on detours on twitter. It's not as sophisiticated as a fancy system, but it's working. We're also using craigslist's events page and facebook's events calendar to reach our college age people. This is all in the past few months -- so I'm interested to see if its actually worked and will lift ridership for us!

Thanks Walt for your contribution here. I suspect there's some immature perspectives in corporate America who still validate HUGE branding expenditures when they are simply lured by the thrill of being in the Super Bowl.

With the rise of social media, I think the opportunity does exist, as you suggest, to create mind-share - stuff that really produces results! I applaud FedEx for taking a hard look at this expense.
